MANSE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

The Next Dance at the Manse…

The capital campaign to support the Manse

The Manse, one of Cincinnati’s only hotels to welcome African American guests, was listed in the 4th edition of The Negro Motorist Green Book.ERS, The Model Group and Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing are collaborating on a unique affordable housing project for seniors that will help keep alive the stories and dignity of a very important part of Cincinnati’s history — the former Manse Hotel.

The Manse, one of Cincinnati’s only hotels to welcome African American guests, was listed in the 4th edition of The Negro Motorist Green Book, a national guidebook advising African American travelers on where they might be safely welcomed as hotel guests, restaurant diners, or to get a haircut.

Many legendary African Americans signed the guest registrar in the 1940s-60s, including legendary jazz musicians like Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday and baseball Hall of famers like Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron.  The grand ballroom was host to local societal events, meetings and conferences including the 1946 NAACP National Convention.

The Manse and surrounding community began a steep and steady decline in the 1960s, with the hotel eventually converted to poor quality low-income housing.

As part of a larger overall urban revitalization of Walnut Hills, ERS is playing a critical role in restoring The Manse as a quality Affordable Living community for seniors.

With significant infrastructure challenges associated with the dilapidated buildings and requirements of restoring a historic structure, construction costs are unusually high. Thus, philanthropic support is needed to complete the project with the services and amenities that are hallmarks of ERS communities.
